This book is not all what it seems. In the MUD Book bibliography Bartle described it as "one of the most inept books ever published". He also explains Dally's deal: a plan to sell the book to "newbie MUD2 players"; and so it was, as a new BT Vax MUD2 player back in '86/'87, I posted off the (then) princely sum of GBP 4.95 to Albermarle Way for my own copy. When the book was delivered shortly after I eagerly poured over every page. I was slightly baffled by the enormous differences between the text and the game, particularly in chapter 5 "MUD Spells". Despite this I enjoyed the book and still consider it an interesting read.

Recently I've discovered that the book's quirks aren't limited to the detail of its text. It turns out that although the "Introduction" is attributed to Richard Bartle, it was in fact penned by Simon Dally.

Richard may still have a few copies of the book left - email him (richard@mud.co.uk) if you want to try to get hold of a copy.
